DIY Bow Mary Janes

Look what I made!

Sweet Mary Janes with pretty floral bows! If you’ve got a pair of ballet flats that could use a little something to make them more special, this easy peasy DIY is just the ticket.

To make your own Bow Mary Janes, you’ll need:

  • Some ballet flats (either plain ones or ones with simple embellishments that can be removed)
  • A glue gun and glue sticks
  • 2 large press studs
  • Scissors
  • Iron on adhesive such as Vliesoflex (to bind 2 pieces of fabric together)
  • Dressmakers chalk
  • Ruler
  • Iron

Step 1

If your shoes have any embellishments, carefully remove them. The shoes I used had funny bows sewn on, which I unpicked. Don’t try to remove embellishments that are glued on as it’s likely that in doing so you will damage the shoes.

Step 2

Use your ruler and chalk to draw up 4 rectangles, each 13cm x 7cm. Mark the rectangles on the wrong side of the fabric so that they won’t be visable when you’re finished.

Step 3

Cut out the rectangles and, following the instruction on your adhesive, bond them back to back, so that you have 2 double sided rectangles. The adhesive will also reinforce the fabric and make your bows more structured.

Step 4

Pinch the centres of the two double-sided rectangles to form bow shapes, and secure with glue.

Step 5

Cut out 2 strips of fabric approximately 3cm wide (for the centres of the bows). Fold the raw edges underneath and press.

Step 6

Wrap the fabric strips around the centre of the bows (with the raw edges tucked underneath) and secure with glue. Trim away any excess fabric from the ends of the strips.

Step 7

Cut out 4 strips of fabric for your ankles straps. For each strap fuse two fabric stips together with adhesive (back to back), then trim them to the right size. My straps are a bit over 2cm wide and about 21 cm long (from tip to tip) but I have very wide feet, so make sure you test the length of the straps and adjust them to fit, before you glue. I also trimmed the ends of the straps so that they were round.

Step 8

Glue one half of a press stud to the rounded end of each strap.

Step 9

Put the shoes on and postition the straps where you would like them to sit. Use chalk to mark where the other halves of the press studs need to go and where the strap needs to be attached on the other side (on the inside). Glue the straps on, and…

Ta da! You’ve got yourself an adorable new pair of shoes!

Team your Bow Mary Janes with colourful tights and wear them for picnicing in the park, wandering about the farmers market and going on leisurely Sunday drives! Hurrah!

What Katie Wore: Caramel and Violet

Dress: Vintage (Etsy)
Tights: We Love Colors

Coat: Vintage (thrifted)
Shoes: Urban Outfitters

I wore this outfit for our little outing on the weekend. I adore this cute 70s coat. I picked it up for $8 at an op-shop while we were in Victoria. It’s warm and cozy, it fits perfectly and it has just the right amount of nanna-ish-ness about it. I do like a nice nanna coat.

What Katie Wore: Rust and Red

Dress: Vintage (thrifted)
Tights: We Love Colors
Cardigan: Glassons (quite a long time ago)
Shoes: Wittner (last winter)
Bag and Belt: ASOS

I wore this outfit on a little mid-afternoon coffee date with the Reubmeister today. This just might be my very favourite dress. I try not to wear it too often as it is a little bit fragile and prone to pulls, so I have to be quite careful with it, but I do love those big peach and rust flowers, those sheer stripes and that twirly, whirly skirt. Oh yes, I do!

I hope your weekend has been all kinds of lovely!

Put a Heart on it!

I love cardigans, so now that the weather chilly I’m pretty much wearing one 24/7. Plain cardigans are good but cardigans with a little extra cuteness are even better!

I had a navy cardy sitting around that was practical and nice, but not particularly special. Last Sunday I noticed it hanging sadly over the back of a chair and I decided it needed a spruce up. Nothing fancy or tricky, just a little love. I didn’t want to put a bird on it (hehe!), so I went for a heart instead.

Basically, I just ironed some interfacing onto a scrap of cute Liberty of London fabric (to prevent it from fraying), traced and cut out a heart, then hand stitched it onto the cardigan. It took about half an hour to do (and would have only taken 5 minutes if I had used the sewing machine) and the day I wore it I got quite a few nice compliments. Have you got a cardigan (or top, or anything else really!) that needs a little love? Maybe you could put a heart on it!

What Katie Wore: Red and Blue Checks

Though this isn’t a very fashiony blog, I do wear clothes! And silly as it may be, nice clothes make me happy. Nice vintage and handmade clothes make me even happier.

I know (or at least, assume!) you wear clothes too, so I thought you might fancy the occasional sneaky peek into my wardrobe…

Dress: Vintage (thrifted)
Tights: We Love Colors

Shoes: Modcloth

Unfortunately in almost all the pictures Reubs took, I was either looking down at the ground, flailing my arms about or pulling a weird face. Or all three at the same time. Maybe with a bit more practice I’ll be able to do outfit posts, without looking down, flailing my arms about and pulling weird faces. But then again, maybe not. Time will tell…

Anyway! I wore this outfit on the weekend. The dress is my current most favourite. It’s a woollen, vintage little number that I picked up for $10 when we did our big op-shop road trip. It’s super warm and cozy and it makes me feel a wee bit mod-ish. Pretty nifty, huh?
