Thrifty Adventures

Last Thursday was a good day. Whenever we get a midweek day off together (which isn’t very often) we almost always spend it thrifting. On Thursday we visited a bunch of our favourite op-shops, before stopping at El Gordo for coffee and cake. We hadn’t been there before and it was gorgeous! We both had lattes, I had a feijoa cupcake and Reubs had a piece of hedgehog slice. It was all really delicious.

After our coffee break we stopped by the local tip shop for a rummage. We hadn’t been there before either, but it is sure to become a favourite spot of ours now. It was full of all sorts of interesting treasures and would be a particularly great place to visit if you were renovating a house. There were lots of lovely old sinks and doors and things. We ended up coming home with a few odds and ends, including this beautiful sewing machine!

We’ve been searching high and low for an old record player for months now but still haven’t had any luck. We thought we’d finally struck gold at the tip shop because they had a couple, but unfortunately the people at the shop had cut the power cords off. Apparently they do this because it’s difficult to test the electrics in them but they can’t sell them with cords if they haven’t been tested for safety. It’s a teensy bit frustrating! We never see record players in op-shops, so I’m begnining to think the only way we are going to find one (that’s isn’t ridiculously expensive) is at a garage sale. We might just have to start getting up early on Saturdays!

Have you had any fun thrifty adventures lately? Found any wonderful treasures?

Thrifty Finds: Green Vintage Quilt

We’ve had a really, really good run with op-shopping lately. Though I don’t like to bore you with all our thrifty finds (seriously, that could be a blog all on its own!) I do like to show you my very favourite treasures. My latest special find is this lovely vintage patchwork quilt!

Until I stumbled across this pretty thing, quietly tucked in the corner of an op-shop, I had dreamt of finding a handmade quilt for a very long time but never actually had (probably because they tend to become family heirlooms and are held onto!) Judging by the fabrics used, I’d say this quilt is from the 60s or 70s. It was very, very musty when I brought it home, but after a good wash and some sunshine it is now as fresh as a daisy. It’s got one little rip along a seam (which I can easily fix) and a mark on the back, but aside from that, it is perfect. It is also huge! The tag in the op-shop said it was queen size so I bought it thinking it would be perfect for our bed, but it’s actually a king or maybe even bigger, so I’m not quite sure where to put it. I would quite like to throw it over one of our couches but with smelly Daisy dog around, I have to wash the blankets on the couches fairly often, which isn’t very practical for a giant, fragile, old quilt. It’s a shame it won’t work on our bed but I’m sure I’ll find a place for it somewhere!

So it looks like I’m still searching for a quilt for our room. One day I might get the time to make one myself, but in the meantime, the op-shop quilt hunt is on!

Is there anything in particular you would love to find in a thrift shop? Have you found any wonderful treasures lately?

Vintage Caravan Dreams

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I’m kind of obsessed with vintage caravans. I have copies of Vintage Caravan Magazine and an entire Pinterest board dedicated to them. When we drive past an old caravan parked on the side of the road I always strain my neck looking for a “for sale” sign in the window, and I spend a ridiculous amount of time daydreaming about cozy little vans filled with homemade quilts and vintage knickknacks. Last year when one of my favourite bloggers, Kate, and her family travelled around Australia in their vintage caravan, I was so jealous I started spending hours at a time searching for vans online (even though we have absolutely no space to keep one!)

I’m sure one day we will have a little caravan of our own. Though, what we’ll do with it I’m not yet sure. Often I think it would be great to have one for holidaying and travelling Australia in. Sometimes I imagine setting up a little carvan shop. Other times I think I’d just like a vintage van that could sit at the bottom of the garden and be used us a tiny study/studio space… I think the smallness and coziness of caravans make them a bit like cubby houses, but for grownups. How lovely!

What do you think about vintage caravans? Do you have any secret obsessions? What do you daydream about?

Thrifty Finds: Vintage Mustard Yellow Couches

I think most people who op-shop/thrift probably have a wish list of dreams finds. For a long time my thrifty wish list has included a yellow laminex/formica table and chairs, a working vintage record player and velvety, mustard couches with quilted backs. Last Sunday we were at the local flea market with some friends when finally, one of my wishes came true!

When we stumbled across this yellow velvet couch and two matching chairs (that perfectly match our green ones!) I was so excited I almost died right there. Unfortunately finances have been very, very tight at the Humble House this month, so even though they were only priced at $120 for the set, I really wasn’t sure we could afford them right away. (Why do all the bills have to arrive in the same week?) Luckily, I have the most amazing best friend in the entire history of the world. After bargaining with the sellers and getting the price down to just $100, Lauren insisted on buying them for me as an early birthday/Christmas present…

And so the deal was done and the dreamy mustard couches came to live in our little cottage! It’s been a few days now but I’m still bursting with gratitude and giddy with excitement about them. There’s no room for them in our tiny lounge room, as we intend to keep our beloved green couches, so for now the mustard lovelies are creating a cozy corner in our study/studio/spare bedroom/mess room. Somehow they even manage to make the hideous blue walls look slighlty less horrible. Oh happy days!

Have you had any amazing thrifty finds lately? Ever found something right off your wish list? It is such a lovely feeling!
