DIY Bow Mary Janes

Look what I made!

Sweet Mary Janes with pretty floral bows! If you’ve got a pair of ballet flats that could use a little something to make them more special, this easy peasy DIY is just the ticket.

To make your own Bow Mary Janes, you’ll need:

  • Some ballet flats (either plain ones or ones with simple embellishments that can be removed)
  • A glue gun and glue sticks
  • 2 large press studs
  • Scissors
  • Iron on adhesive such as Vliesoflex (to bind 2 pieces of fabric together)
  • Dressmakers chalk
  • Ruler
  • Iron

Step 1

If your shoes have any embellishments, carefully remove them. The shoes I used had funny bows sewn on, which I unpicked. Don’t try to remove embellishments that are glued on as it’s likely that in doing so you will damage the shoes.

Step 2

Use your ruler and chalk to draw up 4 rectangles, each 13cm x 7cm. Mark the rectangles on the wrong side of the fabric so that they won’t be visable when you’re finished.

Step 3

Cut out the rectangles and, following the instruction on your adhesive, bond them back to back, so that you have 2 double sided rectangles. The adhesive will also reinforce the fabric and make your bows more structured.

Step 4

Pinch the centres of the two double-sided rectangles to form bow shapes, and secure with glue.

Step 5

Cut out 2 strips of fabric approximately 3cm wide (for the centres of the bows). Fold the raw edges underneath and press.

Step 6

Wrap the fabric strips around the centre of the bows (with the raw edges tucked underneath) and secure with glue. Trim away any excess fabric from the ends of the strips.

Step 7

Cut out 4 strips of fabric for your ankles straps. For each strap fuse two fabric stips together with adhesive (back to back), then trim them to the right size. My straps are a bit over 2cm wide and about 21 cm long (from tip to tip) but I have very wide feet, so make sure you test the length of the straps and adjust them to fit, before you glue. I also trimmed the ends of the straps so that they were round.

Step 8

Glue one half of a press stud to the rounded end of each strap.

Step 9

Put the shoes on and postition the straps where you would like them to sit. Use chalk to mark where the other halves of the press studs need to go and where the strap needs to be attached on the other side (on the inside). Glue the straps on, and…

Ta da! You’ve got yourself an adorable new pair of shoes!

Team your Bow Mary Janes with colourful tights and wear them for picnicing in the park, wandering about the farmers market and going on leisurely Sunday drives! Hurrah!

A Nest for Poppy

What’s that peeking out of the basket?

Oh, I see!

Someone has taken to nesting in our yarn…

She snuggles up in the woolly things and plays piano on the cuddly skeins. But really, who could get grumpy at this?

Wishing you a weekend full of snuggly things and cozy times!

The Barnyard Nursery

Sure, we like eating junk food, we like fireworks and we like ferris wheels, but what we really love about going to the show is the farm animals. We always make a beeline for the barnyard nursery and spend most of our time there. Yep, we are that 20-something couple, hyped up on sugar, chasing lambs about with all the 6 year olds.

Yes. That is a tiny piglet in a bowl. Oh, the cuteness!

Reuben got to hug an alpaca. He can now die a happy man. (If you’ve been following our blog long you might recall that Reubs is mildy obsessed with alpacas.)

This adorable piglet kept resting his head on his tiny goat friend’s back. It was pretty much the cutest thing in the entire history of the world.

This little goat seemed all sweet and innocent…

Until he started eating Katie’s hair! (But Katie didn’t really mind!)

Spending time with animals makes us incredibly happy. When we finally tore ourselves away from the barnyard nursery, our hearts were just so full. In our dream life we would be surrounded by pigs, goats, alpacas and chickens every single day, but for now we’ll settle for soaking up these lovely moments with animals wherever we can.

Wishing you all a wonderful week, with full hearts and happy faces!

A note from Katie: I just realised I have worn this dress an awful lot on the blog. I wore it here and I wore it here. You are probably beginning to think that I don’t own any other clothes but I swear, I do! It’s just my favourite never-fail dress. Do you have one of those?

The Bendigo Show

Last night we went to the Bendigo Show. (For our non-Australian friends, most towns in Australia have annual fairs/carnivals that we call “shows”.) Though we are new to Bendigo, a trip to the local show is a tradition for us. When we lived in Brisbane we always went to The Exhibition, and in Sydney we went to the Royal Easter Show. It’s one of our most favourite things!

We ate fairy floss, took a ride on the crappiest ghost train in the world, had a peek at the entries in the crafty competitions, spent a ridiculous amount of time patting cute farm animals (more on that to come!) and watched fireworks. It was wonderful!

Tonight we are munching our way through the small mountain of candy that came home with us. What are you up to on this fine and dandy weekend?

Flying Foxes

I went for a walk in the park at sunset yesterday. It is such a beautiful time of day, as the weather starts to cool down and everyone settles in for the night. I had most of the park all to myself. As I was walking, I came across a big camp of flying foxes. Unlike everyone else, the flying foxes (also known as fruit bats) were just waking up to start their day and were having quite a rowdy little party!

I love flying foxes. When I was a kid, they would black out the evening sky and make such a racket. I always like the contrast of their energy and noise with the quietness of the rest of the world at that time of day.

The kind of flying foxes we get in Victoria are Grey Headed Flying Foxes, which are the largest Australian bat and can grow to have a wingspan of one metre. They live on fruit, nectar and pollen and are native to the east coast of Australia. Sadly, they were classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2008.

I hope that flying fox populations don’t disappear. They might be noisy and bad news for fruit farmers, but they are one of the many wonderful things that I associate with Australian life. I love that they sleep upside down, that they wake up when everyone else goes to sleep, that they exist on a diet almost entirely of fruit and perhaps nicest of all, that they live in family groups up to a thousand strong. Flying foxes are a little bit strange and that’s what makes them so awesome. They remind me that it’s ok (or even preferable!) to be different.

Have you had any animal adventures lately? What creatures are native to where you live?

Reuben :)
