Vantastic (a Giveaway!)

This giveaway is now closed.

Vantastic 1 Vantastic 5 Vantastic 3 Vantastic 4 Vantastic 2 When Kate of the beautiful Foxs Lane blog announced a little while ago that she was working on a book, I got really excited. When I discovered it was about “retro caravan holidays in the modern world” I got really, really excited! I’m a little bit obsessed with vintage caravans and have often daydreamed about finding an old van, doing it up and going on a big adventure. In 2011 Kate and her lovely family did just that! The five of them packed up their vintage caravan, Frankie Blue, and embarked on a 6 month road trip around Australia. I followed their journey via Kate’s blog with great admiration (and I have to admit, just a teensy bit of jealousy!) Yesterday a copy of Kate’s book landed in our mailbox and as soon as it was unwrapped, I snuggled down with a cup to tea and devoured every page. Vantastic is just beautiful. It’s bursting with practical information for beginner caravaners, sprinkled with cute crafty projects and yummy recipes and, naturally, the styling and photography is gorgeous. I know this book is going to become a much loved addition to our little library and I’m sure that in years to come, when we’ve got a van of our own, it’ll be absolutely invaluable. And! The really good news is, we have a copy to giveaway. Hurrah! To go into the draw all you have to do is leave us a comment. We’ll use the random number generator to draw a winner at the end of the week. Good luck everyone! And congratulations Kate!

Katie x

PS This giveaway is open to all our wonderful readers, both in Australia and overseas.

Update: The winner of the giveaway is comment number 3. Congratulations Gillian!

This year, on a friday evening at the end of June me and my boyfriend were looking for a last-minute trip to the sun online and somehow we started fantasizing about a caravan…. That sunday we bought one. The week was spent cleaning, putting some new fabrics in and installing electricity every evening after work. A few days later, on Saturday, we left to the south of France with a lot of butterflies in our stomachs and really not knowing anything about caravan camping….
We ended up having a frog in our car because we got lost in some forest looking for a camping that apparently didn`t exist anymore, we left the lights on while we were taking a nap at a parking and had some Polish people push the car to get it to work again to then notice while driving 120km/hour that we left some keys on top of the caravan (it`s a fold-up type)….
Since we bought it at the beginning of this summer holiday we have been camping in Germany, The Netherlands, France and in our own country Belgium
    I haven`t regretted it for a second!!!

I LOVE the idea of van-living. I’m not sure if I could do it long term (because I might be what some people call a hoarder) but I do see potential for short van-ventures while my belongings stay at home.

To me, van-living strikes a holiday state of mind. I imagine trips to visit loved ones and little breaks away to beautiful quaint places. I’m not sure how insane this is, but I imagine my cat travelling with me so my van would have a cat door πŸ™‚

Buying a vintage caravan is one of our daydreaming fantasies! We’d probably mostly park it next to the house and hang out in it (because we’re such homebodies), but we do still dream of finding the perfect little cozy one!

  33. Linda August 7, 2013 at 3:30 am #

  36. Charmaine August 7, 2013 at 6:40 am #

One of our cherished memories is of a family holiday, 20 years ago, when we and our (then) two little girls and their grandma ambled through the countryside of the Yorke Peninsula, SA, in a ‘gypsy’ caravan pulled by Banjo, a gentle, giant, Clydesdale. Would love to ‘graduate’ to exploring some other neck of the woods in this beautiful country, ‘Vantastic’ style, now that we are of grey nomad vintage …

Oh wow! What a gorgeous looking book! When Koren and I were little girls, Mum and Dad took us on several long holidays all around Australia in a caravan (just a standard one though not a vintage caravan unfortunately!). Some of my fondest memories as a child are of those times and I believe it’s one of the reasons why I have such a passion and love for the Australian outback and wildlife. Having given birth to our first child in May, I have started to think about all the things I can share with her that I loved as a kid. Some of my best memories are of family caravan trips to the ocean…lazy days of walking with the dogs, playing on the sand, eating at the little fold out table and curling up at night in the tiny bed tucked into one end of the van. She’s still a bit little for ‘vaning’ just yet, but one day!

Hi I am one of the lucky ones living the dream, nearly eighteen months ago we bought a eight year old van and just recently sold our home and plan to live in the van for up to three years. Currently I am overseas visiting my daughters but when we return we will just be cruising around. We have done the big loop of Australia so now we just want to go to places and if we like them stay a week or stay a month. The only down side is our family (children and elderly parents) doesn’t like it when we want to live this kind of life. I too had dreamt of this life for sometime so please don’t give up hopefully your time will come too.
