On Weddings and the Passage of Time

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of watching one of my dearest friends marry the love of her life. I have known the bride since we were in high school together, and watching her take this beautiful big step was so incredibly moving. Some of the other gorgeous girls I went to school with were also there to celebrate, so it was lovely to catch up with them all. I hadn’t seen any of the girls for well over a year, but it seems no matter how long it’s been, whenever we see each other it’s like no time has passed at all. Cliched as it sounds, in some ways school seems like a lifetime ago, yet in the same breath it feels like only yesterday. I can hardly believe we are all in our late twenties because in my mind my school friends are still just 18 year old girls!

At the reception we sipped Pimms and pondered the passage of time. The wedding was held at my friend’s mother’s home; the very same place we gathered as teenage girls for sleepovers and parties all those years ago. It was poignant and rather bittersweet to be reunited there. I couldn’t help but wonder, what it will be like in another 10 years from now? When we meet up will it still be like no time has passed at all? Will we ever start feeling like grown ups, or will the milestones of adulthood always feel a little surreal? I suppose only time will tell. In the meantime, I am so grateful for friendships that stand the tests of time and geography.

What a gorgeous wedding! I feel the same way about my friends…and time. I’m 33 so our 15 year reunion was this year. I read that we were an honored class and said to a best friend that I didn’t see why. 15 YEARS, she said! Oh….lol

We’re getting close to our 10 year reunion and I really can’t believe it either! 10 years. How can that be?!

Lovely post, Katie. Great to hear about your travels.
In my experience that feeling of not growing up never goes away.
I turn 49 in January, but in my head and heart I don’t feel all that different to the 18 year old me who was full of insecurities and doubt.
I’m probably a little more grounded and a tad less self-obsessed (I hope!), but still the same day-dreamer – trying to make sense of the world.
Safe travels to you and Reuben.

Yes, I keep hearing that no one ever really feels like a grown up! I don’t feel much different now to I did when I was about 6, so it makes sense that you should feel the same at 49 as you did at 18. I guess we grow, learn and evolve with time, but our hearts never really change. I quite like that! I don’t ever want to lose my imagination and sense of wonder :)

I feel so lucky to have a handful of friends that I feel this way about. No matter how long it’s been since we last talked or how far away we are from eachother whenever we come together it’s almost like we pick up where we last left off. It’s a beautiful feeling and I hope these wonderful ladies stay like this in my life forever.

Of course, it would also be really nice if they lived round the corner from me. But oh well!

    Looks like a beautiful wedding!

what a lovely wedding – love the vintagey personal ones as opposed to the shiny generic ones of the 90s!
this is similar to a great wedding i attended this year back in the UK – was so weird/lovely to catch up with old freinds, just goes to show roots run deep when it comes to personal connections that matter x

In one week from now I’ll have been married for 10 years! Now, to me, that’s crazy speak, my mind tells me it can’t possibly be that long ago, but my heart is overflowing with the magic and struggles that have happened over those 10 years, and it seems so long ago I can’t even remember it. My 32 year old self wishes my wedding was as gorgeous as this one, but my 22 year old self struggling to pay for everything ourselves thought what we had organised was just gorgeous considering it was all we could afford.

We had many friends stand with us on that day, and only some of them have stood the test of time, but it’s those who have that make my world more joyous with each visit and each phone call.

    A beautiful post xx

Wow, congratulations on 10 years Loreena! That is wonderful. When Reubs and I finally tie the knot it will be small and inexpensive but that’s ok! Getting married should be about the marriage, not the wedding :)

What a beautiful place for a wedding and I LOVE Pimm’s Cups! It is amazing how we can not see some friends for years but when we do it’s like time hasn’t passed. Signs of a true friendship!

That wedding looks amazing. If I ever wed it’s the type of wedding I would love.
